A Tesla Model S car, operating in ‘Full Self-Driving’ mode, was involved in a fatal accident in April, where a 28-year-old motorcyclist lost their life. The driver, aged 56, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide. The driver admitted to using a cell phone while utilizing the driver assistant feature. Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving (Supervised)’ software requires active driver supervision and does not make vehicles autonomous. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported one previous fatal accident involving Tesla’s FSD software. Tesla’s camera-only system has limitations and relies on cameras and artificial intelligence, which could result in inaccuracies. Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, aims to achieve full self-driving capability next year. In a recent interview, Musk discussed his vision of future vehicles where drivers can engage in various activities, including watching movies and sleeping. The NHTSA has conducted investigations into Tesla’s Autopilot system in the past, and Tesla had to recall its vehicles to enhance software safeguards.
